DIY Zig-zag shoes finished!
Want a groovy pair of shoes but don’t want to dish out the cash for it? Well, this might be the solution for you.
You can either use an old pair of plimsoles, or like me, go out and buy yourself a cheap pair. I went to Primark and got a white pair of plimsoles for only £2.50! Cheap as chips. You then need to buy some permanent markers. I went with the trusted Sharpies from WHSmiths. You want a marker that you know won’t wear off in the rain and that you know will stay on. Also try finding a pack with lots of colours. This will ensure you can have a lot of choice depending what style you want to go for.
Okay so once you’ve got your plimsoles and your markers, you then have to decide on the pattern you want to go for. I went for the zig-zag look, which was pretty easy to do. All you need is a piece of thick paper or piece of card and cut a zig-zag line through it. This line will be the base design so make sure you get it looking just like you want it to look like once on your shoe.
Start with the front of the shoe, place the piece of card with the zig-zag line facing you, start colouring the first part in. Once the first strip is done, move the card up by 1 cm (ish), pick a new colour and colour in again. Carry this along until the whole shoe is complete. Mix up the colours to make it as colourful as you want. I wanted a colourful rainbow look, but the colour choice is up to your style and choice.
Once all that was done, I decided I wanted the tongue of the shoe to be coloured in to. Instead of carrying on the zig-zag pattern, I coloured that into a block red. I then followed on and coloured the side of the shoe in blue. As a final little detail, I also coloured in the tips of the laces in red.
The great thing about this style is that you can put any pattern you like and totally play around with it. My next project is drawing on the Union Jack. Not sure how I’m going to manage that yet, but I will keep you updated on my progress.
